This is a bit of a departure from what I usually write about; but there is an underlying thread that links it back to digital marketing and branding.
The fact of the matter is that none of us know everything. In fact most of us; either armed with a degree or a Matric think that we know everything and that the world is ours to conquer.
Well that’s only true in part.
A lesson I have learnt over the years is that you can never underestimate the benefits of a good coach; mentor; ally or whatever you want to call them. Whether we are talking about a sports coach or a business coach. They offer a perspective; motivation and encouragement that cannot be attained from introspection and self-reflection alone.
Choosing your coach is very important and is not a decision that should be taken lightly. Their role and function is to not only help you realise your strengths and weaknesses; but also to guide you through a mine field of decisions and pitfalls that are waiting in all aspects of life. That means that your coach needs to have 3 very critical things:
- a vested interest in your success
- a track record of success in the area they are coaching you in
- a deep understanding of you personally
When these three things combine in a single person; there can only be a successful coaching relationship. But the critical notion to understand is that the onus is not on the coach to see to it that you succeed. That can only ever be on you!
Your coach is just there to make sure that you have the very best chance of succeeding; they are not there to do the work for you.
I have been very lucky to have had a number of great coaches in my life over the years. People who have had my back and my best interests at heart. I am eternally grateful for those people.
If there are two things that they have all taught me; above anything else; they are that:
- It is that it is vital to take what you have learnt in life and pay it forward. If you have had the privilege of having a great coach; be a great coach for someone else. Help someone else succeed!
- Have a good network. There is no way to make this point too clear. The ability of being able to pick up the phone and call in some help is huge!
Having a reliable network of people on which you can depend is almost directly proportional to your ability to succeed! The same can be true in most areas of life and business.
Think about digital marketing: your content is nothing without a great and engaged network to consume and share it. SEO is great to get your content found through search; but it is the network that really makes the wheels turn. Whether it’s on social media or whether its offline – the network is what consumes, sees value and shares.
So in short – surround yourself with those who add value to your life and remember that the rules work both ways – so be sure to add value to their lives as well!
